Nano Drama on Hellofest 2025! My best efforts!

I want to continue writing about micro journal because that is the reason I revived this blog but I really have a good news.

Yesterday, there was the 2025 Hellofest, the animation festival.  And like back in 2014 (WHAAAT), it has the 8 seconds film contest.  It's a unique and special category that only can be done in Hellofest.  There is almost no creative limitation to what can be told in just 8 seconds.

Back in 2014 I tried making a stop motion with my amigurumis. I made it through the final with my 8 seconds animation: Simalakama.  I didn't win but it was a very special moment for me, to watch my animations being screened in a big screen with a lot of audiences.  Hearing and watching the live reaction of the audiences reminded me that I made animations for the audiences, and it felt wholesome.

Fast forward to 2025, It had been quite a long time since the last Hellofest.  I am now a teacher, I teach animation and I really hoped my students would join the 8 seconds film contest.  But the deadline was at the same time as the mid exam. I couldn't be the teacher who ask them to finish their mid exam animation assignment and at the same time ask them to join the contest. As an animator, Hellofest is a very special festival so I shouldn't skip it, so if my student can't join the contest, I had to be the one joining the contest.

With only 9 days remained to submit the film, I suddenly got the idea.  I have been writing about micro drama for my academic research so I was inspired by it.  Instead of making micro drama, I made nano drama, the even shorter duration of drama.  I wasn't exaggerating if I said I made the animation with micro journal rev.4.  I wrote down the dialogue and plot on the tiny screen of rev.4.  I really had no time to make proper notes of the idea. With the deadline approaching I need to make quick decisions. And despite I need the F5 keys to make animation, I didn't have time to replace my keyboard and I used micro journal rev.4 for the whole animation compositing and editing process.  Oh I made a lot of  quick decisions I didn't have time to think about it.

Since my drawing and animation are so so, I thought I need to use an extra special technique to make it unique.  So I use embroidery.  It was stupid and crazy decision, I spent the whole week to embroider all the parts.  Luckily, I was alone at home so nobody witness how messy my room was.

I thought of using stop motion, which use over the top camera, but I am suck at photography.  So I used scanner.  The scanner is broken, and I don't know if anybody realized, there are dead pixels on the pictures.  The animation production was the most violent production I ever had.  I killed a cicak (house lizard) accidentally I don't know how exactly,  I found its body underneath the fabric and paper scraps.  I also almost killed the printer.  And yeah, the scanner was already half dead. And I ruined the rev.4's spacebar that I have to replaced its insert steam.  Not to mention it was tiring to embroider everything.  It was a huge damage to my wallet because I had to order extra embroidery threads and the shop sent the wrong colors.  There was also system failure when paying the voice actor.

But. overall it was fun experience and I love to brag about the process to my student LOL. I would like to share the whole production process here but I might have to write it down for an academic journal as well so I would get publication point (ah the life of a faculty member).

Then it was announced yesterday. I won best effort award!! it's totally worth it :D.

A not so quick project

WWF Indonesia held an animation challenge called "Tigernimation". As you may already guess, it's about protecting Tigers. The deadline was at August 10, I didn't really have time, because I was handling many projects. But... it's a challenge and I like challenge.

So I collected unused exam papers (I have my own source) and made handdrawn animation.
What so called quick project was not a really quick project. Because the tracing desk was too tall, I got back pain and stiff (and blistered) hand.

But the animation was finished at August 2nd. I was planning to upload it at August 9 but... They postponed the deadline to August 25.

I know the audio is crappy, and I certainly could do better with the visualization but no. I really have jobs to do, so I left it as it is.
And if you search "Tigernimation" in instagram, you will find a lot of good animations. So I kinda happy I made handdrawn and rustic animation, because if I made digital and colorful animation there are way too much animation with pretty visualization and technique.

Anyway, this project was really fun. Drawing on exam paper is actually really entertaining. I specifically choose papers with a lot of numbers/ math formula on it.
Of course I already ask permission to use them. If I didn't use the paper for the animation, the paper would end up as a food wrapper or I don't know, trash? By the way there are a lot of empty answer, what a waste of paper right?

Crazy October

September passed in a blink, and now is October.
First thing first... I have a website now!!!! So please do come visit it :)

www.dessytab.id

it's my "professional" website.  I couldn't afford a web designer so I tried to make it by myself, and I only had 3 days to make it, so it's impossible to hire a ninja designer with no budget and time.

Someday... if I finally have the budget, I will hire a web designer.  but that after I repair my laptop.
or to be precised, when I finally learn to save money. I'm terrible at saving money.

As you can see from the screenshoot, I made the web for my new animation: Pulang (Going Home).
Pulang is officially selected by Dok Leipzig 2016 to be screened at the Kid Dok programme.  And it will be a world premiere, so if you are happen to be in Leipzig, please come watch my animation :)

Read more about the film and schedule here

Currently, a lot of people helping me so that I could go to Leipzig, so I am really thankfull.  I still need to care of my Visa right now, and the time is running out, so wish me luck so that I could go to the Dok Leipzig 2016.

in the other hand, things are not looking good with my main job, but let's not spoiled the good news with bad news :)

coming soon, maybe next month, maybe next year, just maybe

a short animation.
coming soon.
hopefully.

I took almost 2 years to finish it, not that I was working on it every day.  It started 2 years ago, and I got tons of drama problems during the time.  it's done now.  But after spending so long time to finish it, I still not ready to show it to the world.  Would anybody care to watch it?

Judi Tahunan

I have an unofficial schedule called: Judi Tahunan (Yearly Gambling).   As you may know I have a fulltime job at an educational software company.  I kinda like this job and I want to keep it as long as I could, but as an artist, I need to have my own project whether yarn related stuff or animation.   I promised myself that I would make at least one animation a year or an amigurumi every months.  The simplest way (not easy, just simple) to get fund for the animation is by sending it to the competition or festival.  Even though I didn’t win I could get a motivation to create the animation and show it to the audience.  Last year my animation got screened at Hellofest 2013, it was the best feeling I ever had as an animator, it felt even better than winning previous contests.

I don’t remember what I’ve done from January to March, I only remember that I started my Judi Tahunan at April 2014 by joining an animation competition held by a book publisher.  It was my very first horror themed animation, inspired by Eunice Nuh’s Poem: Seribu Mata (thousand eyes). the art was inspired by iOS Game: Yearwalk by Simogo.  It’s also the very first time I work with a narrator, Sari Kemala who is also a narrator at the company. The BGM and SFX was created  by Sandi Mardiansyah, a very good friend of mine who was a coworker at ZeusBox Studio.

The character (the girl) is based on Miriam, the girl from “ Si Manis Jembatan Ancol” , a popular ghost TV series back at the 90s.  At the TV series, Miriam braided her hair and she was bringing a food canteen for her boyfriend, a painter, but she got rape by some drunk men and murdered at the Ancol Bridge.  Later she became a ghost, a pretty ghost with white mini dress and long hair.

I didn’t win, but that’s not the worst thing.  Since it is based on a book and copyrighted, I can’t show this animation without screening right by the publisher and the author.  I already contacted Eunice Nuh, the author, and I already show this to her, she says she liked it.  I tried to contact the publisher so I could share it on youtube, and they said they will screened it on their own youtube channel after the contest over.  However, up to this day, this animation remain hidden.
I though of uploading this animation secretly, and share it as a “cursed” video, so it would go viral, anybody who saw it will have constipation in 7 days.  No… it’s not The Ring :D

Then from May to August I worked on the animation for the ASEAN Animation Festival 2014.  I think I really hit the jackpot, thanks to this Festival, I got not one but two trips to Bangkok :).  I think it’s the best contest I ever joined.  Thailand has the best hospitality as the event holder.  They not only make a great ceremonial event, but also arranged a city tour for the participant.  Now I really love Bangkok and the people.  I also made some friends from the other ASEAN countries. it’s kinda funny we lived as a neighbour but know almost nothing about their culture.  Now I’m considering to visit Myanmar, because the winner of the contest came from Myanmar.  so I really would like to know the place who inspired them.

I became greedy, while waiting for the result for the first round of ASEAN Animation contest, I started making an animation about Earthquake for another animation contest.  I got my bachelor degree by making an animation series about Earthquake, so I still have a lot of references about this topic.  The challenge was to make a new animation about earthquake.  I decided to make a  more fun animation so the character were Bambang Bombay & Brambang.  it’s a pun of my family name: Bambang.  Onion in bahasa called Bawang Bombay, and shallot in bahasa called Bawang Merah or Brambang (if it’s fried).  Bawang. Bambang.  Do you see the similarity?
why do I use onion or vegetable as the character?  Because I was bored of using animal and human character.  And Nature is the best teacher right? Vegetable and plant are part of the nature.  And... you can't learn about earthquake without knowing that Earth consist of many layers.  As Shrek said, Onion has a lot of layers, right :)
I didn’t finish the animation, because later I was working on the ASEAN animation. but maybe someday I would finish this animation.

From July to September I also worked on some project with my recurrent client.  I was very busy and tired with work, contest, and side project.  So by the end of the project I decided to take a break while sending submission to a residency program.  It felt funny to suddenly not doing anything beside my fulltime job.  So I go shop a lot, watch a lot of movie, even the crappy movie,  it gave a great damage to my wallet :p  I even bought a PS Vita, because I was so bored I didn’t have a mood to knit.

During the shortbreak, I made a very short animation called “Televisi” or Television. a short animation about energy (electricity to be precise).  I made it for Festival Sadar Energi, a festival about saving energy. The animation is done within 2 days, and the sound was made by Sandi Mardiansyah again.  and YEAH, I got a bad pain in the shoulder because of this animation marathon.
The animation didn’t win, but it’s really fun to make the pooping toaster scene.  (I didn’t make a typo).

The festival was held by the ministry of energy (actually I forgot), and there was an awarding night near the place I lived, but it’s a closed event.  I didn’t got the invitation and I was in my pajamas eating Nasi Padang when the comittee suddenly called me.
C(Comittee): “Hallo, Dessy, we are waiting for you and the team at the registration desk”
M(Me): “HUH?  What registration desk?”
C: “You are one of the finalist”
M: “But nobody told me that”
C: “HUH? Wait a second, I will call you again”.

but nobody called me. I never knew what she meant.  it’s just too funny. I skipped a free dinner invitation by ministry.  who am I anyway LOL.

Few days later I got a call from hwbefgertlert  okay let’s skip this story for now for a surprise.  it is some kind of bonus round from a Jackpot machine.  I will tell you later cause I need to prepare a new Kebaya for this event.
NAH… not a wedding nor an engagement party. it’s bigger than that :p

there are 2 months left before 2014 ends, but I don't think I will participated in any other animation event apart than I already involved.

Behind The Scene: Kopas The Thief

Still about the ASEAN Animation Festival 2014, this time I will share some stories about my animation project: Kopas The Thief.
So, to participate the workshop, we need to prepare an animation concept, and then the jury will pick 12 concepts, and the chosen teams will have to do some pitching.
Before we went to Bangkok, we have to prepare the slide, although we didn't know yet whether our project would be chosen or not.

Here are some slides that I prepared for the pithcing round to explain my idea.

I made the slides before the comittee sent me the template, so in the end I never used this slides (although I spent few days to design every slide). I kinda regret that I didn't use this slide and used the template because I was so afraid breaking the rule.  Lesson learned: rules are meant to be broken :p
Do whatever you think will give the best impression of your project.

And as always, I also made an amigurumi version of the character for a lucky charm.

I actually brought this amigurumi to Bangkok, but I didn't sew the eyes so I can't show it to the audience. That's the second regret.

anyway, the presentation somehow worked despite of my funny English, so I went to the next round: making the animation :)
The challenge is to finish the animation in one month, using the money they provided.  The hardest part was to look for the voice actor.  Luckily, Cak Waw introduced me to Ibnu Angga, a sound Engineer.  Mas Ibnu Angga helped me found the perfect voice actor and also edited the sound for the animation.
During that month, I still went to work at the office in the morning and working on the  animation at night.  I was very lucky it was a fasting month so I could go back from the office earlier than usual.
The animation was done like the plan, but at the same time I have a deadline from my side project.
At the night before I went to Bangkok, I barely got any sleep because I have to upload the side project with the sh*tty internet connection.  So I was in zombie mode when I went to the city tour.  I was really fun, but I was too tired to enjoy it.

There are more stories about the animation.   I will write about it again later... maybe after the November 26 ? :D

Oleh-oleh dari Seminar Asean Animation Festival di Bangkok

I want to write this post in English, so I could practice my English, cause it’s been so long since I wrote in English.  BUT…  this post is dedicated to Indonesian, especially Indonesian artist so I write this in Bahasa Indonesia.  international reader, please use the google translate :)

Meskipun menurut Mr. Thienchai Pinvises (sorry to call you Mr Lawyer), meng-hire pengacara bisa menambah masalah, jadi lindungilah karya Anda sejak awal.

Jadi selalu bersiaplah menyongsong kesempatan :)

Next post: My Animation Proposal.

NomNom and the BIAF award

I was participating on a short animation idea competition held by BIAF (Baros Animation Festival).  So I made a story, design character, storyboard, and of course the concept of an animation.  The theme was deforestation and reforestation.
The character for my animation named NomNom, a monster who lives in the forest and eat everything. He can eat as much as he can, and once he started, he can't stop before everything is gone.
the same problem with deforestation,  the deforestation major cause is actually not illegal logging but the greediness, and we (who live in the city) share the same responsibility as the people who cuts the tree.
NomNom eat more than he needs and before he realize, everything has gone.  Pretty similar to what happen to human.  NomNom is a cute monster, and human could also become a monster.  So Are You a NomNom?
I designed the short animation as a part of a campaign, so I also designed a website too.
all this was just a concept, if you are an organization or institution who concern about environmental issue and you are interested to funding or working together to make this project comes true, please contact me :)

NomNom and the trophy
the animation sample were made in 2D, but there's a possibility that it could be done using stopmotion.

NomNom and The Forest.
The forest is designed like a wide cloth that could be pulled like a blanket

the website design,  there are actually some more pages.  it's just a dummy, I just grab some logos of the organization and institution who are concern about environmental issue.

Hiro My Hero

I made this animation for Axa Short Movie Competition.  Tonight is the awarding night.  I failed at the very beginning so I don't really care who's winning, cause I'm definitely lost.   I'm still in denial, I know my animation is not extraordinary, and I know it wouldn't win but... ah forget it I'm not a good looser.

the theme is: Saya Berani (I am brave or I Dare).  Since the competition was held by AXA, that insurance company, I was looking for some kind of stupidity bravery which result siliness (and damage) but still got covered by the insurance.  The inspiration come from my sister who was once collapsed after bitten by my dog.  I must admit the final story is not really fit the theme, but I had a lot of fun making story about dog.

as you can see, I only use red, white, blue and brown for the whole animation.  very "AXA".  and again, it's not the "AXA"ness that they are looking for.  it's your lost, AXA :P

Sea of Inspiration

The Beach and The sea always be my favorite scene to draw.  I don't know how many time I made designed (never being animated) animations with the sea as the background.

like this one I found from my archive. It's one of the illustration for an animation I never made.  Despite its bright scenery, the title was "dear tortoise" and the story was about a griefing hare.  it's too sad that I don't want to finished the script.

"Dear Tortoise"

And then, There's also "ke laut yok" (let's go to the sea).   I originally designed the character for comic, but later published it as comic strip. I though of making the animation version (more like a music clip), but back then I was busy working on college assignment. The story was about three teenagers found a boy who is stranded in an island and there's no logical explanation of how.

  Ke Laut Yok

The story inspired another animation I made together with my friends.  The animation title is "Si Bodoh" and of course 90% of the story changed into a very different animation.  too bad my hard disk drive was stolen, I don't have the copy of "Si Bodoh" :(
The animations was very rough, we work in a team of four with different style of drawing, and we were a total amateur.  Thanks to the solid team work and good presentation, we got A.

The latest one is "Cece & Cece", animation for my sister's wedding invitation.  Last year on her birthday, she asked no gift but an animation for her wedding.  My sister's fiance's name is Caesar who is called "Cece", and my sister's name is Severine, who is called "Cece" too by our nephew.  it was started as a prank, my nephew who was 1 years old back then called me "Cici" cause he can't say my name, so I taught my nephew to call my sister as "Cece" cause it's resembled Caesar's nickname (they were just started dating back then and of course she asked for this animation after they got engaged, about two years later)

Cece and Cece

The first animation  design was like the above, cause I wanted to make some experiment using black and pink, and the theme was the same as the wedding: the sea.  She asked me to make the animation since October but all I made was that picture.  I didn't have inspirations for the story.  I could think of various slapstick story or cheap romantic story, but I don't think it fits my sister image, and of course I don't want to be rude to my future brother in law.  so I didn't use this design at all and totally change it few days before the deadline :p

There are actually more animations with sea or water or beach theme that I ever made, but I will safe it for the next time.

Rejected design: a chef animated gif

I'm crazy about contest, that's not a secret. I  lost so many times, so I no longer cry everytime lost.
this one is exception, I wasn't sad, I was furious!
this gif were made for a design contest, they asked for an animated gif of a chef "baking up a new site".  the contest holder change the brief multiple times.
up to this day,  I still can't get it why I was lost since the winning animation is fugly. it's my very honest and objective opinion.
I made this animation using inkscape and photoshop.

The Animator has return!

when I was reviewing the past year, I felt dillemmatic cause at one side it's been a very good year for my crafting activity, but at the other side, I've been a very passive designer.
I just waste my 2012 by doing nothing as a designer.
(Oh, I got paid as a designer/ animator/ visualizer whatsoever in a company, but it doesn't  count for some particular reasons)
So I was very happy when I was commisioned to make animation for Cyrosella earlier this year.  it's a short project but it's love, cause all I can say is I Love Love Love doing this job.
it reminds me how I love making animations.  and the best part is I can proudly say, I'm back.  The animator has return :)

Thanks Cyrosella for trusting me.
and thanks nicotina for the great song

SurpRICE !!!

made using Hippo Animator by Hippo Studios, a software to make animation that works on iphone and android. (FYI, I have neither of those)
It's difficult to draw directly on this software, but I think it's pretty usefull as an alternative animation software. cause you can make... animation with it!
it's my second try to use Hippo animator, I still learn to use the tools, cause it's (of course) different to the softwares I usually use, but there are so many thing could be done with it.
as an example, I could make simple interactive. Me. the script dummy. made an interactive.
You could download the free trial on the site or you could also download the demos to learn how to use it.

don't forget to visit my knitting blog to join a very surpRICE-ing giveaway :)

green green grass of home

found this texturing tutorial by kiwin upt uo
and tried it

do you see what's missing?
I forgot to put the shadow :p
it's kinda funny after using flash for years, making animations become so easy, then back to traditional frame by frame animations

Beruang in animated pixel art

I'm a new GIMP user and I still trying to explore the uses of GIMP,
I'm not into photo editing, so let's skip that part for now.
just like photoshop, GIMP can also be used to make Gif animation,
and I tried to make an animated pixel art.

the character was Beruang (=Bear or having money), based on a doll I made recently (oh so predictable).
Beruang has a lot of money, he ain't Uncle Scrooge, He loves to throw the money, cause he is so D*mn rich.
I wish I were Beruang.
I think my next task is to learn making grass texture and clouds.

Gue + Jejaring Sosial

 watch the animation here

while still searching for jobs, I made this animation for Increfest 2011,
a local animation and game competition held by the Department of Industry.
I knew about the event about 2 months before the deadline.
I was inspired by the social media trend among Indonesian teenagers.
I made the story with similar idea about last year, but never finished the animation.

I designed the character using avatar concept, a simplification form of the user's profile (umm.. I don't know how to explain it correctly)
the character design was done 2 months ago, but there's no progress at all for the animation until it was only 1 week left before the competition deadline.
so on the last whole week, I arrange a new BGM, a storyboard then the animation.
and there's a lot of trouble happened during the process, such as broken files.
you'll see that the first scene on the animation is kinda blurry, it was because of the original file was broken,
and I don't have enough time to recreate the scene.
and I actually did create the same scene twice.  Both ended up broken and can not be fixed or edited at all.
luckily, it finished right on time :)

I guess I'm the luckiest animator, cause I was chosen as one of the ten finalist over 64 competitor, and also won the best character award :)
tho I must admit that my animation is not as good as the other animation, I still have a lot to learn.
Thanks anyway

you could read the side story too in my knitting blog

Anying & Teyong : Mosquito

Anying & Teyong: Mosquito from dessy TAB on Vimeo.

Fresh from the oven!
it was fresh last night actually.

Made it right after I finished another animation two days ago (also a personal project, but I won't share it here yet)
this time instead making another animated gif, I made Anying & Teyong in short animation.
I resized it too so maybe it would looked better in handhelds.

So sorry if you found the sound/ BGM crappy.
I usually made the BGM first then the animations, but since it wasn't planned at all, well you'll see no.. Hear.

Anying & Teyong : Inner Peace

you may have guessed it, yes, I just watch Kungfu Panda 2 :)
it's really a fun movie to watch, especially in Indonesia during Lebaran.
Lebaran is about forgiving and being forgiven, and we can learn about "inner peace" from Kungfu Panda 2
(well I hope I'm not being a spoiler)

anyway, I found this Chameleon doing the inner peace in a bucket at my garden :)

Happy Lebaran! Find your Inner Peace :)
